How to Eliminate Hikvision False Motion Detection Alarm

False Motion Detection Alarm is a very important function of IP Cameras, but it often goes unnoticed. When the alarm activates, it does so silently and without a warning, and typically sends a false alarm message. This can cause the IP Camera to go into an alarm state and stop recording, making it useless. This is why we need to fix the Hikvision False Motion Detection Alarm problem.

Most users of motion detection security cameras regularly experience false alarms caused by everything from heavy rain to falling leaves, flowing water, etc. Hikvision’s latest motion detection function is not an exception.

For instance, Hikvision’s most affordable series, the DVR-1000 series, are among the best video security systems on the market. The 360-degree viewing option, for instance, keeps intruders at bay by giving them a difficult angle to spot you. However, if you’re wondering how to fix Hikvision False Motion Detection Alarm, here is a snippet of some of the solutions that can help. Firstly, let’s talk about what causes hikvision false motion detection alarms.

What causes hikvision false motion detection alarms?

Alarm conditions are set by the alarm settings of the camera. The following are the different alarm settings:

Motion detection sensitivity. The higher this value, the more sensitive the camera is to motion. The higher this value, the more sensitive it is to active shutter operations on the sensor chip (e.g., panning). Motion detection area size. The larger the area, the more likely it is to catch a motion. A smaller area means the camera has a higher chance of missing actual motion within its field of view.

The larger the area, the more likely it is to catch a motion. A smaller area means the camera has a higher chance of missing actual motion within its field of view. The minimum object size. When a camera is on, it will monitor the movement of any shape object within the range of this value (e.g., when an object slightly smaller than this size walks by, the alarm is triggered).

When a camera is on, it will monitor the movement of any shape object within the range of this value (e.g., when an object slightly smaller than this size walks by, the alarm is triggered). Active Shutter Detection sensitivity. This is similar to Motion Detection Sensitivity, but it relates more to the PIR (passive infrared) feature on the camera (e.g., when a person walks past and breaks the PIR detection zone, it triggers an alarm).

Unfortunately, if you have set up your own camera or simply installed a default configuration distributed by Hikvision, there is a good chance that you’ll experience hikvision false motion detection alarms.

This issue is mostly caused by either the active shutter sensitivity or the active shutter area size setting. And there is no way around it. You cannot change or control these settings after installation because they are fixed in stone.

So how do we solve this problem?

How to Eliminate Hikvision False Motion Detection Alarm

First, let’s talk about how to make an adjustment to the default settings of your camera (so you can prevent false motion detection and the resulting alarm).

Secondly, let’s talk about how to eliminate the underlying cause of a nuisance hikvision motion detection alarm.

So, it’s better to prevent false motion detection in the first place rather than to try and solve the problem after it happens. If you want to learn more about camera settings, please refer to our previous posts on this subject.

To prevent unwanted false motion detection (and also avoid a nuisance hikvision motion detection alarm), simply adjust your camera settings so that they automatically reset after 10 minutes. By doing this, any triggers of an alarm will reset after 10 minutes and no longer be active.

To make the adjustment, do the following:

  • Go to your NVR Management Host web page (or open your IP camera software) and then click Setup > Network Settings > Advanced Settings. To make this adjustment, you’ll need to use your computer’s Control Panel by simply clicking Apply.
  • Next, select the Video Setting tab and then click the Motion Detection (Video/Audio) button at the bottom.
  • Next, you’ll need to use your computer’s Control Panel by simply clicking Apply.
  • In the Motion Detection (Video/Audio) page, select the Active Sensitivity tab and then enter the following:
  • Wait Time = 10 Minutes – this value represents how many minutes should elapse before a motion-triggered event expires. You can also specify other values from 1 minute to 14 days.

Note: This value represents how many minutes should elapse before a motion-triggered event expires. You can also specify other values from 1 minute to 14 days.

Number of Alarms = 0 – this value represents how many motion-triggered events before it is ignored and considered as a false alarm. You can also specify other values from 1 to 6.

If you do set this value to zero, you’ll have the advantage of avoiding the nuisance of hikvision motion detection alarms but will lose the ability to search through recorded video for motion-triggered events.

Movement Threshold = 30 – This is basically invisible. It’s the value above which Hikvision will activate motion detection.

Another notable way of eliminating hikvision false motion detection alarm is by using a combination of advanced motion detection events such as intrusion detection and line crossing detection. This is very powerful and will drastically cut down, if not eliminate the nuisance of false alerts from your Hikvision cameras.
